An election for the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives took place on January 3, 2017, during the opening day of the 115th United States Congress. The incumbent speaker, Paul Ryan, was re-elected. The election took place following the Republican Party's victory in the United States House of Representatives elections, 2016.
John Conyers, the Dean of the United States House of Representatives, administered the oath of office to Paul Ryan who, in turn, administered the oath of office en masse to the rest of the members of the 115th United States House of Representatives.
All Republicans voted for Ryan except for Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who voted for Dan Webster. All Democrats voted for Pelosi except for Kathleen Rice of New York and Jim Cooper of Tennessee, who voted for Tim Ryan of Ohio; Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who voted for John Lewis of Georgia; and Ron Kind of Wisconsin, who voted for Cooper. Two members, Kurt Schrader of Oregon and Paul Ryan, did not vote.
